The inaugural Mining Review Africa Safety in Deep Mining conference, took place in Johannesburg from 15-17 July 2008

The Chief Inspector of mines from the Department of Minerals and Energy, Mr. Thabo Gazi, opened the event with a keynote address on integrated governance, emphasising the importance of the tripartate alliance and its role to ensure sustainable safety in our mines at all levels. This was followed by a highly-interactive panel discussion and debate, led by Mr Paul White, Minerals and Energy Resource Specialist from the US Embassy in Pretoria and Mr. Senzeni Zokwana, President of the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) also participating on the panel.

Other highlights included a case study on accident prevention strategies, presented by Mr. Koos Barnard, Senior Manager of Operations from Driefontein Gold Mine; a courageous leadership approach to safety by Mr. Don Ritz, Vice President of Safety and Health at Barrick Gold Corporation in Canada; and wellness management within mines – HIV AIDS, TB and Silicosis by Mr. Douglas Smith, Director and National Training Manager at ETC (Education, Training and Counselling).

It is expected that Mining Review Africa Safety in Deep Mining 2009 will strongly reflect the high level of activity witnessed at this year’s event.
