Johannesburg, South Africa — MININGREVIEW.COM — 25 June 2010 – Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited “’ the world’s 5th-largest listed gold miner “’ has announced the closure of its Phakisa mine in the Free State province after a fatal underground explosion.
A company statement issued here said three workers had died and two had been injured in the blast.
It added that it had temporarily shut down the mine. “The company may start investigating the cause of the “very unusual” explosion tomorrow,” said Tom Smith, chief operating officer for Harmony Gold’s South African region, in a telephone interview with Bloomberg News.
