Underground Support Solution

Minova RSA, a member of Minova International and the Orica group of companies offers innovative underground rock support solutions to the African mines.

On request of customers, Minova RSA designed and manufactured the largest Autorock support drill rig to date, capable of installing roofbolts in a 7.5° slope decline at a height of up to five metres.

Our brief, Ferreira, managing director of Minova RSA says, was to develop a drilling rig with the following criteria:-

  • Compressed air driven unit.
  • Working height from 3.8 – 4.3 metres.
  • Roof bolt hole drilling.
  • Hole diameter of 34 mm.
  • Hole length of 2.4 m.
  • Holes to be drilled perpendicular to the slope of the decline being a 7.5°.
  • Effective loading into the holes of suitable polyester resin capsules.
  • Effective and safe insertion of 25 mm ø by 2.4 metre long steel roof bolt.
  • The rig to be operated remotely from a safe distance by only two people.

Some three months later and there exists a machine that uses the Minova patented Quick-Chem resin capsule insertion method to install the resin with the drilling machine from a position of safety. The roof bolt is also inserted into the hole with the machine without any scaffolding working from the footwall of the decline.

“I would say the uniqueness of this unit is that we managed to offer a complete solution for the safe drilling and installation of a support tendon with a relatively simple machine and system,” Ferreira says.

“The Quick-Chem resin capsule system allows us to insert the unique Too-Speedie resin capsules into a support hole from a position of safety and ensures a full column support is achieved, every time. The resin capsules used in the system are manufactured on our new state-of-the-art machine recently commissioned by Minova RSA at our Isando works. We can now offer our customers the best possible resin capsule rock bolt solutions available,” Ferreira says.

Minova RSA recently established a fully equipped workshop for the repair of all Autorock machines in the Rustenburg industrial area to offer an improved service to its customers in this area.

Research and development in all fields of Minova’s business maintains a high priority. Fields of focus are rock support systems with resins and or cementious products as well as the rock bolt hole drilling and installations in most environments. The company has a number of Autorock drill rigs operating in the coal mines and hopes to expand this part of the business as well.

“Our new prototype Autorock support drill rig to enable effective support in development ends is to be launched soon,” Ferreira says.

Minova is a SABS 9001:2001 accredited and Level 6 BBBEE company, and it well placed to be the preferred provider of support solutions.
