TSX-listed gold miner SEMAFO has reported that an armed incident occurred between the town of Fada and the Boungou mine site in the Est region of Burkina Faso which resulted in the death of five gendarmes and one sub-contractor employee.

There is no communication available on the reason for the incident.

Operations at the Boungou mine were not affected the company notes.

However, as a precautionary measure, SEMAFO will be increasing its security measures and will continue to closely monitor the situation with its partners to protect the safety of SEMAFO employees and its operations.

The corporation has expressed its deepest sympathy to families of the victims.

At the end of June SEMAFO poured first gold at Boungou – slightly ahead of schedule. It is unfortunate that such a terrible incident has occurred so soon into its operational lifespan.
